If you are deciding whether to bring a car to Duke, here are a few things you will want to consider:
- Duke offers parking to students based on their residence location, but spaces are limited.
- Students who plan to park at Duke must register their vehicles by purchasing parking permits. Vehicles parked on campus must display a valid parking permit at all times for the area in which they are parked, including academic breaks and holidays.
- Student parking permits are issued for one year and are effective from August 16 through August 15.
- First-year students live on East Campus and may purchase a RED Zone permit only.
- Permit holders are responsible for all fees and fines incurred by either the vehicle they have registered, or any other vehicle which incurs a fine while displaying their parking permit. Charges will be automatically billed to student Bursar accounts.
- Transit bus and van service is offered free of charge to students and is a great way to move about campus without use of a car.
If you have decided to bring a car to Duke, the first step is purchasing your permit.
- Permits purchased by August 1 will be included in the move-in packet you receive when you arrive on Tuesday, August 19.
- Remember to display your permit on your vehicle immediately and be sure your vehicle is legally parked in the correct area!
- Permit fees are charged to your Bursar account. The annual residential fee for 2008-2009 is $240.
- Purchase your permit; on-line registration begins June 16.
If you decide to bring a vehicle to Duke later in the year and permits are available at that time, you may do so by visiting the PTS office near Research Drive.
