Appealing a Parking Ticket

Appeals must be submitted in writing on a PTS Appeal Form in one of the following ways:

- Delivery to PTS, 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. weekdays, 0100 Facilities Center on Coal Pile Drive
- Mail to PTS, Box 90644, Durham, NC 27708-0644
- Fax to PTS, 919-684-8612
- Electronic submission NOTE: When you submit electronically, you will not be able to amend your appeal with attachments or supporting documents (photos, sketches, repair bills). If you wish to add supporting documents we suggest one of the other submittal methods.

Only appeals received within 15 calendar days from the date of the violation will be reviewed.

Appeals are reviewed by an Appeals Committee at a weekly or biweekly meeting (3:00 p.m. on alternating Tuesdays and Wednesdays). The Committee is comprised of employees and students from the Duke Community. Employees are volunteers, and students are appointed by DSG or GPSC. Although PTS provides information and support, appeal decisions are made independently by the voting members of the Committee.

A written appeal may be supplemented by an Oral Appeal. Appellants may schedule five minutes to address the Appeals Committee in person. It is the appellant's responsibility to schedule an oral appeal when the written appeal is submitted.

The Committee considers all available information during the adjudication process. That includes information provided by the appellant, the issuing officer's statement, an appellant's parking history, and the Duke University Parking Policies.

Appeal results will be mailed or e-mailed, as specified by the appellant. Notification can be expected within one to three weeks from the time of submittal.

The decisions of the Appeals Committee are final. There is no re-appeal process.

Some suggestions for writing an appeal:
- Keep the explanation as short as possible while still providing pertinent information
- Be honest
-Consult the Parking Policy to ensure your appeal is well-founded and that you are familiar with the violation for which your vehicle was cited

The following are not usually acceptable reasons for dismissing a citation:
- Ignorance of parking rules
- Issues of convenience (i.e., late to class or meeting)
- Others were parked illegally
- Parked illegally for only a short period of time
- Perceived inconsistent enforcement
