ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION ANSWERS

  1. What options do commuting employees and students have other than driving alone to campus?
    Duke University offers several alternatives to driving to campus alone, which include ridesharing, carpooling, vanpooling, biking and regional transportation.
  2. What is a ridesharing arrangement?
    A ridesharing arrangement is defined as two commuting individuals sharing one permit and dividing the cost of the permit evenly.
  3. How does PTS define a carpool?
    A carpool is defined as three or more commuting employees or students who ride together.  The 2008/2009 rate for carpooling is $4.00 per month or $48.00 annually, per participant. A carpool with four or more members receives a free permit. Learn more about carpools here.
  4. What is a vanpool?
    Commuting employees or students who lease a van through Triangle Transit make up a vanpool.  Participants must register with TTA in order to take advantage of this service.
  5. How do I find people interested in ridesharing, carpooling or vanpooling?
    Triangle Transit participates in a secure, statewide matching program that can identify commuters in your neighborhood who are interested in ridesharing, carpooling or establishing a vanpool. 
  6. What if I rideshare, carpool or vanpool and I have to drive to campus occasionally?
    PTS provides up to 24 daily parking passes for those times when you might have to drive to campus. 
  7. What if I rideshare, carpool or vanpool and I have an emergency that requires me to go home early?
    By registering for theTriangle Transit Emergency Ride Home Program, you can be assured of reliable transportation home should an emergency arise.
  8. How is parking assigned for commuters who rideshare, carpool or vanpool?
    Participants utilizing alternative transportation methods are given priority permit assignments over individuals who drive alone.
  9. Can those who commute to campus by bicycle receive occasional parking passes?
