General Parking Answers
- Do I have to buy a permit to park on campus?
Yes. All vehicles parked on campus must have a valid permit. The only exception applies to visitors, who may choose to park in hourly-paid lots or garages, or purchase daily passes.
- I’ve been on a waiting list for a new lot forever! How can I check my status?
During the registration and renewal period we are not able to provide that information as customers are updating their preferences. Please call us at (919) 684-7275 after September 1 and we’ll tell you your position on the waiting list.
- What does “pre-tax” parking mean?
Federal law allows parking costs to be deducted from the salary of eligible employees before taxes are applied. By paying for a permit through payroll deduction, the amount of salary subject to Federal and State withholding tax is reduced by the cost of the permit.
- Where is the PTS office and when is it open?
Parking and Transportation Services is located at 0100 Facilities Center, on Coal Pile Drive. Our office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. We are open during lunch hours.
- I’m only going to be on campus for one semester. Does PTS offer a half-year permit?
We do not offer a one-semester permit. However, if a student permit is returned prior to January 20, 2009, a pro-rated refund will be made to your Bursar’s account.
- I forgot my permit today. What should I do?
Please stop by the PTS office at 0100 Facilities Center for a complimentary temporary permit.
- I’m leaving Duke and my permit is payroll deducted. How do I stop that?
In order to stop payroll deduction, the permit must be returned to PTS. We will notify Corporate Payroll to discontinue your payroll deduction as soon as we receive your permit.
- I’m temporarily handicapped. Can PTS help me?
If the duration of your disability is expected to be less than three months, please call us at (919) 684-7275 to discuss your parking options.
- I am permanently disabled and park daily at Duke. What’s the procedure for obtaining a handicapped parking permit?
Employees with permanent physical disabilities must request consideration for handicapped parking by completing an application form and forwarding copies to Employee Occupational Health and Wellness (EOHW) and the Disability Management System. Students should submit this application form to Duke Student Health Center.
After review of the form, EOHW and Student Health will make appropriate recommendations to Parking and Transportation Services.
- What are the rules about parking during the summer?
During the summer, permit restrictions are adjusted in many locations allowing more flexibility for our customers. Please visit this web site or call us at (919) 684-7275 for more information.
- My company provides service to Duke. Do our vehicles need parking permits?
Yes, vendors and contractors must purchase parking permits. The 2008/2009 annual fee for service permits is $360, and is prorated monthly. Please call PTS at (919) 684-7275 for more information.
- Are the parking gates always down? I’d like to park elsewhere at night.
Parking gates in surface lots are closed 24 hours per day. However, many lots can be accessed after hours and on weekends by using your DukeCard. More information is available here.
