2007-2008 Guidelines for Alternative Transportation

Duke University offers several alternatives to driving to campus alone, which include ridesharing, carpooling, vanpooling, biking and regional transportation.

What is a Rideshare?
A ridesharing arrangement is defined as two commuting individuals sharing one permit and dividing the cost of the permit evenly.

What is a Carpool?
A carpool is defined as three or more commuting employees or students who ride together.  The 2007/2008 rate for carpooling is $5.15 per month or $61.80 annually, per participant.

What is a Vanpool?
A vanpool is defined as commuting employees or students who lease a van through Triangle Transit Authority. Participants must register with TTA in order to take advantage of this service.

  • Duke parking permits are not required for TTA vans or vanpool participants.  TTA vans will be allowed access to any unreserved parking area. If you are interested in setting up a vanpool, please go to the Triangle Transit Authority website at www.rideTTA.org and explore the many incentives for adopting this program.

Benefits of Ridesharing, Carpooling And Vanpooling:

  • Participants will receive up to 24 daily passes to use when they must drive alone.  Additional daily passes may be purchased for $3 each.
  • Daily permits are valid only in the Grounds lot, Bassett Drive, Duke University Road lots, H lots, or Parking Garage 3 patient/visitor section.
  • Participating Duke employees and students may register with GoTriangle's Emergency Ride Home Program. Information about registering for and using this service can be found at www.gotriangle.org/ERH
  • Rideshare and carpool participants’ permit assignments are given priority over individuals who drive alone.

Policies For Ridesharing, Carpooling And Vanpooling:
  • Employees pay their portion of the applicable monthly parking fee for rideshare and carpool arrangements through payroll deduction. Students pay their portion of the annual parking fee through their bursar accounts.
  • Vanpool fees are paid directly to Triangle Transit Authority.
  • Each participating member of a rideshare or carpool must register a car with Parking and Transportation Services.
  • Should a rideshare, carpool or vanpool lose participants and is no longer eligible for the respective parking privileges, the remaining participants will have thirty days to add new or replacement participants.
  • If a rideshare, carpool or vanpool disbands, the remaining individuals will be offered available parking options.
  • Fraudulent activity will result in the suspension of parking privileges at Duke University and fines of up to $200 per offense. This includes forging parking permits, selling permits, displaying out-of-date permits, transferring or trading permits to another party, or any other action determined to be fraudulent by a parking enforcement official.
  • Rideshare and carpool parking permits are valid for one year.

General Guidelines:
Participants must register with Triangle Transit Authority in order to be eligible for the “Emergency Ride Home” program. Furthermore, participants understand and agree to abide by the regulations that apply to their parking permits and agree to park in the area assigned to them with their carpool or rideshare permit.  If a carpool or rideshare disbands, participants agree to surrender their carpool or rideshare parking permits and they realize, that as an individual driver, they are not entitled to the same type of permit that they received while participating in a carpool or rideshare program.

Commuting By Bicycle:

Employees and students who bike to Duke and do not register a vehicle may register as a bicycling commuter to receive free daily parking passes.
